"Shonin" is the eleventh episode of Season 1 of 12 Monkeys. It first aired at 9:00 p.m. on March 27, 2015 on Syfy.

Cole splinters to Tokyo, 1987 in a last chance effort to stop the Army of the 12 Monkeys.[1]

At the White Dragon nightclub in Toyko, Nakano is trying to sell Leland Goines some very old remains for $500,000. Goines rejects the offer because he thinks the DNA is fragmented. Nakano tells Goines that the sample could be part of his legacy to his daughter Jennifer; Goines is upset at the mention of Jennifer. When Goines goes to the men's room he is accosted by James Cole, who tells him that the sample contains a virus. Cole is attacked by José Ramse and they fight on the nightclub floor until stopped. Nakano tosses one knife between Cole and Ramse. They begin to fight and Ramse apparently fatally wounds Cole.

Katarina Jones and her staff realize that Cole is dying. They are forced to try to send Cole to 2015. Cole is sent to Railly.

After being assured that Cole and Ramse do not work for Nakano, Goines agrees to purchase the sample. Ramse is dragged away and Nakano orders one of his men to kill Cole. Ramse is arrested for stabbing Cole, and as he does not have an American passport or Social Security number, the American consul cannot help him. He is sentenced to prison for several years.

1988-1995 Edit

In prison, Ramse is contacted by Olivia, who promises that his son will be safe if Ramse joins the 12 Monkeys, and sends him letters and books. He is constantly beaten by a fellow inmate, but using the principles he learned from The Art of War, he kills the man without lifting a finger by announcing to the entire prison that the man is a snitch. In 1995, he is released and brought to Olivia, who welcomes him. He is initiated into the Army of the 12 Monkeys.
